A History of Southend
Southend has a complex and surprisingly interesting history. From 18th-century origins as the 'South End' of Prittlewell Parish it has grown over 300 years to swallow up six separate parishes... Prittlewell, Southchurch, Leigh, Eastwood, North Shoebury and South Shoebury. The town and the wider borough are both now known as 'Southend'. There have been previous books on aspects of Southend's past, but this is the first for a century to provide a comprehensive, chronological history of the town. Starting in the Stone Age it ends in the modern Information Age, covering all points in between. The story of its evolution as a seaside resort, a commuter town and a regional shopping centre is interwoven with a multitude of amusing, intriguing and impressive events, incidents and achievements in this very readable narrative. This book explains Southend's growth and success and shows the reader where to look for evidence on the ground.

What the critics had to say about "A History of Southend"
"Ian is rapidly earning a name for
himself as our local historian... [He] presents his history in a most readable way which,
accompanied by a fascinating collection of pictures, makes it a must for those interested
in our heritage."
Southend Times
"Ian's book is exceptionally
well-researched and is backed by 164 pictures which provide a fascinating record of the
town's history... Clearly [he] has gone out of his way to demolish the oft-maligned view
of the town as 'lacking history'... This is a book that is very readable and should
rekindle interest among the younger generation in Southend's past... a marvellous
Christmas present for those who are interested in local history..."
Leigh Times
"I would like to congratulate you on an excellent piece of work. It
is so refreshing to see original research on local history in print."
