Islands of Essex
There are more islands in Essex than in any other county in England. The county is home to the most easterly permanently inhabited island in the country and to some of the most important natural island landscapes in Europe. Canvey Island made world headlines in 1953 when 58 lives were lost there during a major flood disaster. Other islands have been home to weapons testing sites, animal breeding and temperance experiments and a great Anglo-Saxon battle against the Vikings. Over 30 Essex islands are covered in this book, including Canvey, Foulness, Mersea and the many other smaller islands around the coast.
